I Love My B-I-B-L-E

August is a five Sunday month. That means our 5th Sunday is always a little different from the rest of the month. This week, we will be looking at Faith Skill #2 – Personalize Scripture: memorize & apply. Using Philippians 4:8 as our primary text, we will teach the kids the axiom: “Think about what God says, and it’ll change you.”

To help our kids learn the books of the Bible, we have already begun a new segment this year called “Word Up.” Starting this week, we will change the title of that segment to “I Love My Bible.” We will also begin using a new theme song called “I Love My Bible” for this segment. You can watch the video below as well as download the song to burn to CD or your mp3 player.

Parenting in August

August is already here, school is about to start back up, and families are beginning to get back into familiar routines. Why not make a concerted effort this year to use some of the time you spend with your kids to talk about spiritual matters? The great thing is that you don’t really have to spend any extra time doing it. Time spent riding in the car, at bedtime, around the dinner table, while you’re playing, or even giving your little ones a bath can be great times to reflect and renew a dialogue that we’ve already begun for you at church.

This conversation doesn’t take a lot of preparation and doesn’t require you to know it all. It simple requires that you consciously steer the conversation in a particular direction. Trust me; once you get it going, you’re kids will probably take the lead. To help you out, I’ve uploaded a few resources for the month of August that you can download to get you started. The links are at the bottom of this post.

This month, preschoolers will be reminded that God loves them – no matter what. Think about that for just a minute. No matter what we’ve done or what we haven’t done, God loves us. Always. It’s an amazing and humbling realization. We will introduce this concept to preschoolers by teaching them that God loves them when they are sad, scared or happy. And, we’ll celebrate that love on the last Sunday of the month just like David celebrated that God loved him.

August = Peace

The Good, the Bad, and the Peaceful

“Starting to argue is like making a crack in a dam. So drop the matter before a fight breaks out” (Proverbs 17:14, NIrV).

Will kids be going back to school in August where you live? What does “back to school” bring to mind? New Toughskins(R) jeans? Football games? Seeing your friends again? Homework and tests? Dreading the hard teacher? Gathering ’round to watch as a fight breaks out?

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bone” (Proverbs 14:30, NIV).

What better time of year to talk about conflict and getting along and caring about others than the start of a new school year?

“Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife” (Proverbs 17:1, NIV).

If you could teach your kids just one thing God says about peace, what would it be?

“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18, NIV).

If you could equip kids with just one skill that would promote peace, what would you choose?

Here are some powerful things about peace (proving that you care more about others than winning an argument) we think God wants all kids to know:

The best way to stop a fight is never to start one. Sometimes, to have peace, you just need to DROP IT. Otherwise, it’s just like making a crack in a dam (Proverbs 17:14).

Making peace doesn’t make you weak. Sometimes you have to GIVE SOMETHING AWAY. Isaac’s conflict with the locals over water rights shows us making peace doesn’t come from a place of weakness, but of true strength (Genesis 26).

It’s better to let go than to get even. Sometimes you have to CHOOSE TO FORGIVE. Jacob was a liar and a cheat, but Esau demonstrated the upside of letting go (Genesis 33).

Just because you didn’t start a fight doesn’t mean you can’t stop it. Sometimes you have to GET INVOLVED. If not for the cool, calm wisdom of Abigail, everyone would’ve paid the price for Nabal’s rude, selfish behavior and David’s hot-headed reaction (1 Samuel 25).

(And for the fifth week, we’ll depart from the norm and focus on a “faith skill,” that of personalizing Scripture:

Think about what God says, and it’ll change you. Philippians 4:8.)

L2L: Leap To Love, Hop, Skip, Leap!

Day three was all about love. During small group, we studied Jonah and how he was supposed to share God’s love to Nineveh. Even though Jonah chose not to do what God wanted him to do, God’s love still saved lives. The fisherman on the boat began to cry out to God when even just a few verses earlier they had referred to Him as Jonah’s God. God showed love in saving Jonah from drowning by having the big fish swallow him. God also had compassion on the city of Nineveh when Jonah warned them of God’s wrath.

Compassion is seeing someone’s need and then doing something about that need. God sees our greatest need (forgiveness) and loves us so much that He paid the ultimate price to meet that need by sending Jesus to pay for our sin on the cross.

We need to LEAP towards God’s love and receive it. The greatest love story ever told is His love for you.
